Secrets of “The Secret”

Posted on 29 December 2008

Ever since “The Secret” came out, I have been so excited to have a reference point for talking about how I’ve lived my life. I use the Law of Attraction naturally. Ever since I was a child, my mom told me that I would be very fortunate and always have plenty so my belief system was, everything good happens to me. I truly believed that, even when circumstances seemed to say the opposite, and therefore the circumstances would change to make my belief system true. Friends joked that if I fell off a curb, Brad Pitt would be there to catch me.

I also remember very clearly a time of about 6 months when I forgot this. I was attracting the wrong events in my life, events I was fearful of, such as negative business associations, financial loss, and loss of a relationship. I know that during those months, I allowed negativity in my life and I listened to people who were fearful and I bought into their fear. I started to look at circumstances as causes and not effects, even though I knew better. I almost couldn’t help it. The more I put my attention on circumstances that were not what I desired, the more I attracted that into my life.

I ended up with negative business associations, huge financial losses and the end of a long relationship. The more I worried about not having enough, the more the universe brought events that fulfilled that worry.

I made a conscious effort to switch back to my previous way of thinking and being, and it was not easy. I had been in such a downward spiral; it was difficult to climb out. I meditated, I prayed, I disengaged from anyone or anything that was not positive and life supporting. I used this period of my life to really study and understand the Law of Attraction. I documented my thoughts, and feelings and matched them up with events. I even timed how long it took to visualize something before it became manifest. I documented how much emotional charge I gave something and whether or not that brought me my desires faster.

Looking back, I am grateful for experiencing those losses. I have a deeper sense of my own personal power to create my life now, because built into my original belief system that “all good things happen to me” is the belief that “things happen to me” and not because of me, so there is still the subtle underlying thought that events in my life are out of my hands. They are not, whether they are things I want, or things I don’t want. I am always the creator of my destiny.

Having been on both sides of “The Law” here are some of the secrets I’ve gathered that “The Secret” doesn’t emphasize:

#1. The LOA works with someone’s vibration.

Everything in the universe vibrates at a particular frequency. If you are thinking thoughts of shame or guilt, you put yourself in a much lower vibration than thoughts of love or peace, or abundance. If for instance, you are vibrating at the level of anger, you will only experience those things that vibrate at the same level. You attract the same exact frequency you put out.

Since your thoughts create your emotion, and that emotion establishes your vibration, in order to change your vibration you must change your thoughts. Sometimes this is easier said than done. You can raise your vibration in stages as you raise your thoughts to a better feeling thought and thus your emotion.

#2. You need a clear intention.

It is nice to visualize what you want and we do it all day anyway. Who doesn’t daydream about that wedding day or dream house? However just visualizing is not enough. What ever you visualize does not materialize, but whatever you set intention on does. The intention backs up the dream because you are telling yourself that you plan on finding a way to get it. With clear intention, unseen power sweeps in with new ideas, events and resources to help manifest the dream.

#3. You need a plan of action.

Without action, it is just a dream. It is the difference between people who succeed and people who don’t. Without a plan of action, you end up drifting on the sea of life without a rudder, and responding to life’s circumstances rather than creating those circumstances that you do want.

#4.  You need to be open to receiving.

If you say you want it, yet don’t believe you can have it, don’t believe you deserve it, or don’t believe you are worthy of it, you won’t receive it.  You need to know you can have it with every fiber of your being. You need to truly believe that somehow you will get your desire. The key word here is somehow…you don’t need to know how, and in fact, it’s better if you don’t. This requires faith. (see #6)

How do you know if you are open to receiving? Very simple…if you feel good, you are open to receiving, and if you don’t feel good, then you are not. Feeling good is your natural state of being and this is the only  state in which energy flows.

#5. You must be in complete alignment with your desire.

If you think you want something in your head that your heart does not want, it will not manifest in your experience. Sometimes we want something because of the way it makes us look to others but our hearts do not truly want them, our heads do. This is living incongruently and giving the universe mixed signals.

#6.  Stay with it, don’t lose faith!

My mentor always says most people give up 5 minutes before their miracle. They want to see results in order to believe, but faith means exactly the opposite: you have to believe it first in order to see the results. Sometimes you have to wait a long time to see your miracle, but there is always a wonderful reason for that. The universe knows the best way to deliver and it usually is not the way you think it will.

#7.  It’s your life! It’s worth it!

Are you too lazy to implement the LOA? It is too hard? Does it take everything you’ve got? It sure does, especially if you are not used to living this way. It is a shift to a higher level of awareness and it takes a lot of practice to develop this new habit. Practice makes perfect! Aren’t you worth it?
