Often times distribution declarations and the ex-date are almost on top of one another. In other words, investors have little or no time to react once a dividend distribution is announced. (ProShares did this just two weeks ago) All distributions are taxable, it does not require you to sell your shares to incur the tax liability. Take, for example, SDS (an ultra short of the S&P 500). SDS went from $87.44/share on Dec. 22 to $77.43/share on Dec. 23 due to a distribution. You technically did not lose $10/share in one day, you just received it as a distribution, which is taxable despite the fact that you did not sell anything and may have even re-invested the distribution back into the ETF. This is why purchasing ETF's in December (and sometimes June) is particularly dangerous. Doc, nice overview.
